River Raid originally launched in 1982 for the Atari 2600 and reached the 5200 the following year, both versions credited to Carol Shaw for Activision: the player pilots a fighter jet flying low over a river, shooting enemy boats and helicopters while managing fuel that drains relentlessly. It was one of the industry's first big hits designed by a woman, in a field almost completely dominated by men. Its levels, generated by an algorithm that guaranteed variety without exact repetition, made it a technical benchmark of its era, and the 5200 version preserves that same tense balance between aim and the fuel gauge's ticking clock.
