Cosmic Avenger is a side-scrolling shooter developed by Universal and released in 1979, at a time when the genre was just beginning to move beyond Space Invaders' fixed screen. The player controls a ship that must shoot down both aerial and ground targets while the scenario scrolls without pause, a structure that anticipates by several years much more famous scrolling shooters. It's a key piece, though little cited outside circles of medium historians, for understanding where the idea of continuous scroll with multiple target types came from, an idea that games like Xevious would later push to its fullest expression.
