Square Enix opened its sequel with a bold move: three hours playing as Roxas, a melancholy unknown, before handing control back to Sora. The community went from bewilderment to calling it one of the best prologues in the medium. Reaction commands turned every boss fight into choreography, and the optional battle against Sephiroth remained the series' difficulty benchmark. Its Final Mix version was a Japan-only exclusive for almost eight years, not reaching the West until 2014, as part of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX.
