Pitfall II: Lost Caverns came out in 1984 for the Atari 5200, with David Crane once again leading design duties for Activision. Unlike the original Pitfall, this sequel ditches the timer entirely and bets everything on exploring caverns, mines, and underground rivers, backed by an instant-respawn system that takes the sting out of failed jumps. It was also one of the first games to feature continuous background music, thanks to an extra sound chip built into the cartridge. Its interconnected level design, free of strictly linear paths, put it years ahead of mechanics that wouldn't become widely popular until much later, and it still stands today as one of the best-regarded sequels of Atari's entire 8-bit era.
