Game of the week
A Nintendo programmer started building a Zelda after hours, on an early Game Boy dev kit, without asking anyone; once the prototype could actually walk, Tezuka went upstairs to ask permission and got it. What came out is the only Zelda with no Hyrule, no princess and no Triforce: Koholint is the Wind Fish's dream, and waking him erases the whole island along with everyone you met on it. Tezuka wanted it to feel like Twin Peaks and pulled it off in four shades of grey. I play it for the things I'd never ask of a 1993 cartridge: a Chain Chomp that follows you like a dog, Goombas tucked into side-scrolling corridors, a Kirby who is an enemy here. And the best one: steal from the shop and your name becomes THIEF to everybody until the end — the Wind Fish included — and if you show your face in that store again the owner fries you with a bolt. This is the 1998 DX edition: colour, the photo shop, and the Color Dungeon that no earlier Game Boy can open. Second in our Game Boy canon, around six million copies across both editions. Play it right here, in your browser — I'm leaving the stopwatch running.

*fffshhkkk ‹dialling 56k› beeeep* September sounds like the console that died young and left the best soundtrack at its own wake. Naganuma invented the noise of graffiti across three Jet Set Radio cuts, Senoue handed the hedgehog a guitar, Mitsuyoshi let the Shenmue sedge tree fall, and Rez turned every shot into a beat. 16 tracks — I play them and I still hear the VMU beeping.

A New York jazz big band led by Charlie Rosen took "Meta Knight's Revenge" from Kirby Super Star and walked away with the 2022 Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, with Button Masher as featured guest. When the brass section detonates my tape wears thin: I've been rewinding it since April 2022 and it still sounds like a battleship.
