In the middle of the 3D craze, Konami let one Castlevania stay in 2D, and assistant director Koji Igarashi seized the chance to break the formula: out went linear levels, in came an explorable castle with experience levels, equipment, and magic, borrowing the structure of Super Metroid. Just when the player thinks they've finished, the entire castle flips upside down and the map doubles in size — one of the best twists in the medium's history.
Symphony of the Night sold slowly and became a legend by word of mouth. Today it's half the DNA of the word metroidvania and the standard every indie in the genre gets measured against. Ayami Kojima's art and Michiru Yamane's soundtrack haven't aged a single day.
