Koji Igarashi broke his own rule and pushed the series into the future: the year 2035, a solar eclipse, and a student named Soma Cruz trapped inside the castle. The tactical soul system turns each of the game's more than one hundred enemies into an equippable power, generating nearly endless build combinations. Regarded as the best portable Castlevania, its critical success saved the metroidvania formula at a moment when Konami had doubts about it.
