Pokémon Gold and Silver were already the most generous sequel in the series' history — two regions, sixteen badges — and HeartGold and SoulSilver paid that back with interest: fourth-generation technology, the Pokéwalker (a pedometer that took your Pokémon out for a walk in the real world, the spiritual forerunner of Pokémon GO), and the detail fans still beg for in every new entry — your lead Pokémon following you around the map with its own unique animations.
It's the remake the community uses as its measuring stick: it respects the original, expands it, and makes it emotional. Johto and Kanto on a single cartridge, the duel against Red on Mt. Silver as a final exam, and that rare feeling that nothing here is wasted. For many, the best Pokémon game ever released.
What the staff says
