Developed by imageepoch and published by Sega only in Japan, 7th Dragon is a first-person dungeon RPG with a deep class system — warrior, hacker, priest, among others — set in a world ravaged by dragons threatening to destroy it. Its art direction and composers like Yasunori Mitsuda gave it a visual and sound identity that set it apart from the console's other dungeon crawlers.
It's the origin of a small saga that would later produce 7th Dragon 2020, and for anyone who enjoys classic dungeon crawlers — grid-based maps, party formation, methodical leveling — it remains an interesting entry point, even though its lack of an official localization kept it off the radar for most of the Western audience.
