California Games was there with the Lynx from its 1989 launch, developed and published by Epyx, revisiting a formula the studio had already proven successful on home computers of the era: a set of informal sporting events — skateboarding, surfing, BMX, footbag, among others — built for quick sessions and high scores rather than serious sports simulation. Its laid-back, summery tone set it apart from the formal competitive sports that dominated the rest of the catalog. It's one of the most beloved launch cartridges in the Lynx library, representative of the carefree spirit Epyx brought to much of its sports catalog throughout the eighties.
