Developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios, Halo: Combat Evolved arrived as an Xbox launch title in November 2001. It put players in the boots of the Master Chief against the Covenant across open-ended levels, with a two-weapon system, drivable vehicles and enemy AI that reacted in formation.
It was the game that gave the console its purpose: it proved a shooter could sustain big levels, vehicle physics and split-screen co-op without losing pace. Its success helped establish Xbox as a serious platform and laid the narrative and gameplay groundwork for the entire Halo saga.
