Area 51

Area 51 arrived in 2005, developed by Midway Studios Austin and published by Midway Games, as a reboot of a name the company had already used for a nineties arcade shooter, though with a completely new story. The first-person shooter told of an extraterrestrial infection inside the military base that gives the game its title, with actor David Duchovny lending his voice to the protagonist. It featured a mutation system that let the character acquire alien abilities as the plot progressed, an unusual twist for the genre. It also came out on PlayStation 2 and PC, with a solid reception that positioned it as a strong action alternative for its year.
