America's Army: Rise of a Soldier arrived in 2005, developed by Secret Level Inc and published by Ubisoft, based on the free PC tactical shooter that the United States Army used as a recruitment tool. The console version added a campaign mode centered on Major Jason Amerine's experience in Afghanistan in 2001, plus the multiplayer matches that gave the original its purpose. Unlike the PC game, this Xbox edition wasn't free and aimed to compete on equal footing with other tactical shooters on the market. It stood out for its insistence on realistic military procedures and a progression system that mimicked an actual career within the Army.
