Agent Under Fire arrived in 2002 courtesy of Savage Entertainment under the Electronic Arts label, and it marked a break for the series: for the first time, James Bond starred in an adventure that didn't adapt any film, with an original story about nuclear sabotage and brand-new villains. The first-person shooter kept the DNA inherited from GoldenEye 007, with infiltration levels, gadgets and vehicle stretches that broke up the pace of the firefights. It also added a multiplayer mode built for shared couch afternoons. Critics received it as a solid entry, closer to action spectacle than pure stealth, and it laid the groundwork for the trilogy EA developed for the Xbox/PS2/GameCube generation.
