Rockstar North packed an entire state onto a single PS2 DVD: three cities — Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas — plus desert, mountains, and countryside, all set in the 1992 of west coast culture: funk and rap on the radio, hood cinema, and the racial tension that followed the Los Angeles riots. CJ could bulk up, get tattoos, learn martial arts, and build muscle — the sandbox had swallowed the RPG whole. Among the voice cast was Samuel L. Jackson as an unforgettable corrupt cop.
With over 17 million copies sold, it was the best-selling PS2 game ever, and its total freedom defined the 2000s. Today it's a double time capsule: of the nineties it portrays, and of that era's untamed Rockstar ambition.
