Dairantou Smash Brothers DX is the original Japanese title of Super Smash Bros. Melee, developed by HAL Laboratory under the direction of Masahiro Sakurai and published by Nintendo in 2001. With a cast bringing together Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, and the entire gallery of Nintendo icons, it perfected the item-based, ring-out combat formula of the original Smash with a much larger roster, blistering speed, and its own Adventure mode. It became, almost by accident, the longest-lived competitive fighting game of its generation: two decades later it still has an active tournament scene worldwide, something very few GameCube games -or games on any console- can claim.
