The founding legend (Square, 1987): a studio on the brink of closure named its last shot Final Fantasy and changed the genre's history. Four Warriors of Light, darkened crystals, choose-your-own classes, and one of gaming's most famous time loops. It reached America in 1990 and planted the other half of Japanese RPGs in the West. A fantasy that was anything but final.
