The Chessmaster brought to the handheld the reputation of one of the longest-running computer chess franchises, known for the solidity of its game engine and for offering difficulty levels able to challenge both beginners and experienced players. On Game Boy, that depth got compressed into a small screen without sacrificing the demands of the original game.
For anyone who enjoys chess as a discipline, it remains a legitimate option: a serious, distraction-free portable board, on a console that rarely bet on such austere board games.
