Aztec belongs to the first wave of temple-exploration games, published by the American house Datamost in the early 80s: an adventurer ventures into a pyramid infested with snakes, alligators and traps in search of a jade idol, machete in hand and with more panic than method. It was born on the Apple II and traveled to Atari computers like much of the era's catalog.
Its blend of platforming, inventory and instant death anticipated ways of adventure cinema that Hollywood was releasing around those same years. Crude by today's standards, sure, but with an irreplaceable matinee charm.
