Batman Returns came out in 1992, developed and published by Atari Corporation, as an adaptation of the same-named film released that same year: the player controls the Caped Crusader through side-scrolling action levels, facing street gangs and villains like the Penguin in settings directly inspired by Tim Burton's Gotham City. It was part of the wave of movie-licensed games that characterized much of the industry in the early nineties. It's one of the most recognizable superhero-branded cartridges in the Lynx catalog, at a time when the Batman license was replicated on almost every console available on the market.
