Fortified Zone puts the player in command of one of two commandos, Beat or Andy, across a series of enemy bases packed with soldiers and mechanical bosses, with weapon power-ups that change the pace of the advance. Jaleco bet on a non-linear structure, with keys and items that determine the order of zones, uncommon for the genre at the time. It's a title that aged well within Game Boy's shooting action: compact, demanding, and with a personality of its own against the flood of Contra clones that populated the console. Worth it for anyone looking for something beyond the reflexive run-and-shoot.
