The Final Fantasy Legend was how Square introduced Western audiences to the start of the SaGa saga, with an RPG system that let you combine humans, mutants, robots, and monsters on the same team, and a progression structure quite different from the numbered Final Fantasy games, despite sharing the name for commercial reasons.
It's an important historical piece: the Western introduction to a more experimental Japanese RPG design philosophy, which laid the groundwork for one of Square's longest-running and most distinctive series.
