Fire Emblem: Souen no Kiseki (Path of Radiance in the West) was the first entry in the series to make the leap to three-dimensional graphics, keeping the turn-based tactical core and permanent unit death that has defined the saga since its Famicom origins, this time with Ike and his mercenary company as protagonists.
It introduced the continent of Tellius, a setting that would continue in Radiant Dawn on Wii, and is remembered as one of the Fire Emblem entries most beloved by Western fans, who discovered it at a key moment in the saga's international expansion.
