Miyamoto wanted to bottle up his childhood memories of exploring the caves and forests around Sonobe, and the result was a world with no arrows, no tutorials, where getting lost was the whole point. It was the first NES cartridge with an internal battery for saving progress — goodbye, passwords — and its gold-foil edition gleamed like a relic. The line "It's dangerous to go alone!" is still a cultural password among players of every age.
