This special edition gathers the story of Bakumatsu Rouman: Gekka no Kenshi (known in the West as The Last Blade) and its sequel into a single Neo Geo Pocket Color cartridge, with the same cast of swordsmen set in the twilight of the Edo period. SNK, which developed and published the title in March 2000, built a points system: as the player completes stories and endings, they unlock characters, minigames, and even the chance to transition into the second entry's plot.
It's an unusual case of a handheld game that doesn't simplify its Neo Geo counterpart's ambition but instead reorganizes it into its own progression format. For fans of SNK's swordfighting saga it's a key piece: it keeps the pulse of the original combat within the handheld's limitations.
