Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is the first entry in the saga designed specifically for PSP, developed by Kojima Productions under the direction of Masahiro Yamamoto and written by novelist Gakuto Mikumo, set between Snake Eater and the later events of Big Boss's timeline. It introduces the system of recruiting knocked-out enemy soldiers to build the player's own army, a mechanic later expanded in Peace Walker.
It was received as a serious demonstration that Metal Gear Solid's tactical stealth could hold up on a handheld without losing depth, both in its campaign and its multiplayer mode. It remains one of the most respected entries in PSP's catalog and a direct forerunner of Peace Walker.
