The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was developed and published by Bethesda — through Bethesda Softworks — and arrived on Xbox in 2002, the same year as its PC version. Set on the volcanic island of Vvardenfell, it offered an open world with no forced path, complete with factions, guilds and a plot built around prophecies and the living Tribunal gods.
It was one of the first real-scale open-world RPGs to reach a console without drastic cuts from the PC version, and it helped establish the genre with Xbox audiences. It laid the gameplay groundwork the saga would deepen with Oblivion and Skyrim, and is still remembered today as a milestone of narrative freedom.
