Chou Aniki - Seinaru Protein Densetsu continues one of the most eccentric sagas in the Japanese catalog: a horizontal shoot 'em up starring hyper-muscular bodybuilders, wrapped in deliberately absurd camp and homoerotic humor that made it a cult object since its debut in the nineties. The "protein" of the title is, as always in the saga, central to the joke.
Above all, it's a rarity: a game that exists to surprise and amuse through its brazen tone rather than the solidity of its gameplay, and one that still has a loyal audience among collectors of Japanese eccentricities.
