1942 is the arcade game where Capcom defined its vertical-shooter formula in 1984: a single American fighter, the Super 942-A "Lightning," facing tight waves of Axis planes and battleships over the Pacific. Its technical contribution — the roll as a defensive maneuver and the escort-squadron power-up — became a genre standard and spawned a saga Capcom kept extending with 1943, 1944, and 19XX.
Today it holds up as a foundational piece: short, demanding, and free of filler, it's the required reference for understanding where modern shmups came from. It plays well in short sessions and remains a legitimate test of memorization and reflexes, not just a historical curiosity.
