'99: The Last War is a vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up set in a futuristic war, with the blunt visual style and no-mercy difficulty typical of its time. It doesn't try to innovate mechanically: it leans on constant enemy waves and a trigger-happy pace, the formula that kept hundreds of arcades running during the genre's golden years.
Today it's more a curiosity for collectors and shmup scholars than a revered classic: it spawned no sequels or memorable characters, but it remains an honest snapshot of how a board-level shooter was made while the genre was still working out its rules.
