1943: Midway Kaisen is the name Capcom used to release its follow-up to 1942 in Japan, a vertical plane shooter that toughens up the original formula with new power-ups, an energy system for the plane, and more aggressive waves of enemy fighters. It came out in 1987 and cemented the saga as one of the genre's pillars before the Neo Geo era. It's still worth playing for the pure satisfaction of the classic shooter: readable patterns, a fair difficulty progression, and that tension of managing a health bar instead of dying from a single hit.
