Chuka Taisen, published by Taito in 1988, reinterprets motifs from the Chinese classic Journey to the West in a side-scrolling adventure where the character attacks while riding a mythical creature, combining platforming with waves of fantastical enemies. It's an example of how Japanese arcades frequently drew on Chinese folklore as a quarry of characters and settings. It remained a secondary piece within Taito's late-80s catalog, but it retains that overflowing visual charm, vivid colors and impossible creatures, that characterized much of the era's arcade action.
