Gauntlet is Atari's 1985 classic that popularized the top-down dungeon as a cooperative format: up to four players choose among warrior, wizard, elf, or valkyrie to fight through hordes of skeletons and demons, managing food and energy while the famous narrator voice announces every move in real time. Its line 'elf needs food, badly' stayed etched in the memory of an entire generation. It was so influential that it single-handedly defined a subgenre, that of the endless cooperative dungeon, and its formula of collecting, surviving, and advancing as a group remains a mandatory reference more than three decades later.
