Legend of Makai follows the quest of a warrior who must rescue a princess held captive by an evil sorcerer, starting with just a sword and picking up weapons and magic items through shops scattered across the stages, an uncommon progression mechanic for a late-'80s action platformer. NMK developed it and Jaleco published it, both in Japan and North America.
It was a low-profile title in its time that gained some retrospective recognition over the years, to the point of joining Hamster's Arcade Archives lineup in 2021 for Switch and PlayStation 4, a second life that rescued much of NMK's less-cited catalog from obscurity.
