Rygar is a 1986 Tecmo arcade game that combines platforming and action with an exploration component uncommon for its time, starring a warrior armed with the Diskarmor, a circular blade-shield thrown as a ranged weapon. Its semi-open world structure, with areas unlocked as upgrades are obtained, brings it closer to an action-adventure than a purely linear platformer.
It's one of Tecmo's great '80s classics, with design ahead of its time that anticipates elements later associated with the Metroidvania genre. Its later NES conversion made it even more popular, but the original arcade remains a solid experience with a personality all its own.
