The Return of Ishtar returns to the world of The Tower of Druaga, the action maze of secret-item collecting that Namco had released in 1984, but adds the possibility of climbing the tower with a second player in co-op, playing Gil and Ki herself, the princess who in the first game was merely the rescue objective. It keeps the floor structure with enemies and hidden objects whose logic of appearance is rarely explained within the game itself.
It is part of a small cult series within Namco's catalog, famous both for its cryptic difficulty and for the community of players who, already in the internet era, set out to collectively decipher the secrets the original design never openly revealed.
