In 1985 Infocom set aside the jokes and dungeons for a while: A Mind Forever Voyaging, by Steve Meretzky, puts you in the place of PRISM, an artificial intelligence that discovers its whole life has been a simulation and whose new mission is to project itself into future versions of its city to evaluate a political plan meant to save it.
Almost no puzzles, all observation: walking the same streets decade after decade and noting how they decay. Social science fiction written with a novelist's ambition, and one of the most cited texts in Infocom's catalog.
