Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls came out in 1995, with Telegames as publisher and Williams Entertainment behind the license: unlike the saga's classic entries, this version drops the format of advancing while beating up rivals on the street and adopts the structure of a one-on-one fighting game, in the style of the wave that Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat had unleashed. The character roster expands with new fighters beyond the Lee brothers. It's one of the clearest signs of how the nineties industry converted action franchises into fighting games so as not to be left out of the genre's craze, with results that divided fans of the original series.
