Necromancer (Synapse Software, 1982) is Bill Williams's rare, towering achievement for 8-bit Atari computers. As the druid Illuminar, you plant trees that grow in real time and fight on your behalf against spiders and the minions of Tetragorn, the necromancer scheming to seize the graveyard.
It unfolds across three linked acts — the forest, the crypts, the cemetery — and each one changes the rules without ever losing momentum. The press of the era called it one of the most imaginative games ever seen on an Atari, and in 1987 Atari itself reissued it on cartridge for the XE line. Frantic, melancholy, and utterly one of a kind: nobody ever made anything quite like it again.
