This Metal Gear Solid is not a port of the PlayStation game but a completely original story developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan, directed by Shinta Nojiri with Hideo Kojima as producer. It is an alternate continuity: it takes place seven years after the Outer Heaven incident of the original MSX2 Metal Gear (1987), not after the PS1 Metal Gear Solid, and Konami never folded it into the series' main canon; the final nod to the agent 'Jack' is, at most, an ambiguous reference to Metal Gear Solid 2, not a direct connection. It keeps the heart of the series: sneaking in unseen, using the environment to your advantage and clearing the enemy base through stealth rather than brute force.
For many fans of the series it is one of Game Boy Color's best surprises: a carefully crafted entry faithful to the spirit of Metal Gear Solid on hardware that gave little reason to expect so much, even if it is a parallel story and not part of the official timeline. Decades later, it remains one of the essential references for understanding how far stealth could be stretched in the era of 8-bit color.
