Intelligent Systems perfected its paper RPG with a brilliant theatrical device: battles play out on a stage in front of an audience that applauds, throws props, and even patches up the scenery. Party members like the flirty Goomba Goombella and the ghost Vivian headline the most beloved story in the sub-series. Fan outcry for a remake lasted twenty years, until Nintendo finally relented with the Switch remake in 2024.
