Based on Neil Gaiman's novel and its film version directed by Henry Selick, the game follows Coraline Jones through the secret door that connects her new home to an alternate universe led by her 'Other Parents,' solving puzzles and exploring settings with the unsettling aesthetic so characteristic of the original material. It's one of the few tie-ins of its generation that dares to keep some of the dark tone of the original source rather than fully softening it for a child audience, which makes it somewhat more interesting than the average film adaptation of the time.
