Antarctic Adventure, created by Konami in 1983, puts the player in the flippers of Penta, a penguin racing across Antarctica dodging crevasses, seals, and blocks of ice as the screen scrolls forward at a constant clip. It was one of the MSX's first great original hits, at a time when the machine still lived largely off conversions, and it helped cement Konami as one of the computer's strongest labels. Its formula of a race against the clock studded with obstacles was popular enough to spawn sequels and ports to other systems, and today it's remembered as one of the genuinely MSX-born icons of the early '80s, with that simple charm of chasing your own best time.
