Green Beret, a 1985 Konami arcade game, has a lone commando fighting his way through knife strikes and gunfire across an enemy base full of soldiers, tanks, and helicopters, in one of the earliest well-formed examples of the run-and-gun genre. In the United States it was released as Rush'n Attack, with a rewritten story to dodge direct Cold War references, while in Europe it arrived under its original title on the main home computers courtesy of Imagine and Ocean. Its fast pace and demanding difficulty made it a required reference for everything that followed in the genre.
