Die Hard reached the PC Engine in 1990 courtesy of Pack-In-Video, and its development story is as curious as its result: it began as a generic top-down shooter in the Ikari Warriors mold, and only near the end of the process did Nihon Bussan secure the movie license to dress it up with the Die Hard name and characters. The result has little to do with the original plot — McClane crosses a jungle and a river under enemy fire before reaching Nakatomi Plaza — but it keeps the straightforward shoot-and-advance action that defines the genre. It was never released outside Japan, remaining an import rarity even for those closely following the PC Engine catalog.
