Nemesis (1985) has the Vic Viper starship facing waves of organic and mechanical enemies, with an upgrade system that forces you to choose between speed, missiles, shields, or the iconic "Options" that orbit the ship, mirroring its shots. It's one of the most influential shooters in history, with a risk-reward curve — losing every upgrade on death — that defined the genre for years; essential viewing in any serious survey of the classic shmup.
