Irem built one of the most demanding and best-designed shooting experiences of the '80s in the arcades, with the Force Pod — a module you can launch, recall, and use as a shield — as the centerpiece of a strategy that went far beyond just dodging and firing. The Japanese release was split across two HuCards, "R-Type I" and "R-Type II," but the TurboGrafx-16 edition in the United States combined both halves into a single cartridge.
Decades later, it's still an essential reference point for horizontal shooters, and this conversion remains one of the best ways to experience it outside the original arcade cabinet.
