4x4 Evolution was born at Terminal Reality for PC and Dreamcast before jumping to PlayStation 2, and it bet on real-licensed vehicles, mud and snow tracks, and physics built for constant sliding rather than pure simulation. At the time it was compared to the arcade rally games of the era, though with the emphasis on heavy off-roading. Over the years it became a catalog curiosity, one more entry in the wave of truck games that rode the off-road boom of the 2000s. It holds up as a piece of nostalgia rather than as an experience that stands up to what came after.
