Amberstar, developed and published by Germany's Thalion Software in 1992 for Amiga, Atari ST and PC, places the player in the fantasy world of Lyramion, where he must gather the thirteen lost pieces of the talisman that gives the game its name in order to seal away the demon Lord Tarbos once more. The engine combines top-down exploration on the overall map with a pseudo-three-dimensional first-person mode for cities and dungeons, and lets you form a party of up to six adventurers with classes chosen in each city's guilds. It was to be the first part of a trilogy Thalion never completed: only its direct sequel, Ambermoon, came out before weak sales closed the studio. It stands as one of the last great attempts at German role-playing in the 16-bit era, with a worldbuilding ambition its commercial outcome never managed to match.
