Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (1987) adapts Aya Nishitani's novel about a young programmer who summons demons through a computer, and lays the groundwork for a system that would become the saga's trademark: negotiating with and recruiting demons instead of just fighting them. It's a fundamental historical piece: without this game, neither Shin Megami Tensei nor, by extension, Persona would exist. Playing it today means visiting the raw, fascinating origin of one of Japanese role-playing's most influential mythologies.
